SA inquiry into governance of Aboriginal organisations attracts criticism

Aboriginal leaders in South Australia say they want to see the “highest level of accountability and transparency” in community organisations, but have criticised an inquiry into issues of governance approved by the Marshall government last week.  The South Australian Parliament approved a formal inquiry into the “governance standards” of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations across the state, after a campaign from Aboriginal community members.  The inquiry will review the accountability, transparency, cultural authority and financial obligations of community controlled organisations and will be conducted by the Aboriginal Lands Parliamentary Standing Committee.  It’s a move that has been criticised by Indigenous leaders across the state as “undermining” Aboriginal people’s ability to self-govern and impeding on their path to self-determination. 

MH building permits come roaring back with almost $16 million in construction

After a quiet month in December with just nine building permits issued in Mountain Home for a total construction value of $1.4 million, activity has come roaring back. Information just released from the City of Mountain Home indicates 26 permits were issued in January with a construction value of almost $16 million, according to a report from Jeannie Anderson from the Building Inspection Department. Three of the permits have construction values in excess of $1 million. The three were – a remodel permit issued to Gregory Company on behalf of Baxter Healthcare, located at 1900 Arkansas Highway 201 North, for a 48,000-square-foot project with a construction value of $8 million;

Haverhill’s newest license commissioner won’t need to come up to speed on procedures and rules when she hears matters for the first time this week. Up until a year ago Laura Angus served as the city’s assistant city clerk and License Commission clerk and was well known to all of the city’s liquor and automobile sales licensees. She joined the Haverhill City Clerk’s office and immediately began serving the License Commission in April 2014 when she was appointed by Mayor James J. Fiorentini. Last year, Angus changed jobs and became benefit counselor to the Haverhill Retirement Board.
