Haverhill’s newest license commissioner won’t need to come up to speed on procedures and rules when she hears matters for the first time this week.
Up until a year ago Laura Angus served as the city’s assistant city clerk and License Commission clerk and was well known to all of the city’s liquor and automobile sales licensees. She joined the Haverhill City Clerk’s office and immediately began serving the License Commission in April 2014 when she was appointed by Mayor James J. Fiorentini. Last year, Angus changed jobs and became benefit counselor to the Haverhill Retirement Board.

The city is seeking applicants to fill vacancies on two prominent city boards License Commission and Conservation Commission.
Mayor James J. Fiorentini is seeking replacements for License Commissioner Gerald A. Sewell, who died unexpectedly this month, and Conservation Commissioner Joseph DiPietro, who is moving out of town.
The three-member Haverhill License Commission is responsible for liquor, automobile sales and food serving licenses. The Conservation Commission is the local environmental enforcement body. It protects land, water and biological resources of the community.
Applications for the volunteer positions are available on the city website at cityofhaverhill.com. Those interested are asked to email completed forms to [email protected].
Longtime Haverhill License Commissioner Gerald A. Sewell died unexpectedly early Sunday morning at age 77.
Sewell had served on the License Commission, responsible for liquor, automobile sales and food serving licenses, since 2010. He was also a constable for nearly 30 years, having founded the Haverhill-based Massachusetts Constable Group in 1992.
He also served as a member of the Northern Essex Community College Alumni Advisory Committee.
