Several area businesses up for Alberta Distinction Awards

Nine local firms are keeping close company among finalists for Alberta Business of Distinction Awards.
Medicine Hat YMCA, Masterpiece Southlands Meadows and REDI Enterprises are three of the four finalists in the mentorship category that will be decided when provincial award winners are announced in June.
Medicine Hat area also boasts two finalists in two other categories.
“Mentorship is an important strategy we use at all levels within the YMCA,” said YMCA CEO Sharon Hayward in a statement. “To receive this award locally and then go on to be a provincial finalist recognizes the hard work of our employees and volunteers. We are very pleased to see such strong representation from Medicine Hat in this award category.”

Creating a “Wall of Sweethearts” was just one of the ways many in local seniors’ residences celebrated this week for Valentine’s Day.
At Chinook Village Eileen Marchand gazes at the three photographs she has displayed on the wall. There is one taken on the day she married Ernest in 1947 after he was discharged from the army following service in the Second World War. Eileen looks chic in a stylish suit and hat.
“Your legs and smile attracted me to you, is what my husband told me later,” she reveals with a smile.

Construction on a new, $35-million, long-term care facility in south Medicine Hat will proceed this summer toward a 2022 opening.
Points West Living told the News on Thursday that phase 1 of a planned care facility and seniors apartment complex will employ about 100 permanent staff when complete.
