Winner in 2016: Fergus Ewing (SNP) INVERNESS and Nairn’s predecessor seat of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber had the distinction of being the only SNP constituency “gain” in the inaugural Holyrood election of 1999 – in other words it was the only constituency the party won without having taken the equivalent Westminster seat in the 1997 General Election. It therefore added a small touch of glitter to a mildly disappointing national result. The winning SNP candidate was Fergus Ewing, husband of Margaret Ewing, who had been a Westminster MP for 17 of the previous 25 years. He was moved to observe: “Anything my wife can do, I can do later.”

Winner in 2016: Kate Forbes (SNP) THIS geographically vast constituency was created for the 2011 Holyrood election, and doesn’t have a clear-cut predecessor – the northern part was previously in the old seat of Ross, Skye and Inverness West, which was the equivalent of the Westminster seat that Charles Kennedy had held for the LibDems since 1983. The southern part had been within Inverness East, Nairn & Lochaber, which was once the Westminster fiefdom of Liberal and LibDem veteran Russell Johnston.

An MSP made an emotional retirement speech in parliament today, after decades of service to the Highlands and Islands.
Veteran Scottish Labour stalwart David Stewart is retiring after three decades of service to constituents in the Highlands as a councillor, MP and MSP.
Mr Stewart became the first Labour MP to represent the previous constituency of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber in 1997, doubling his majority in 2001 before losing his seat to Lib-Dem Danny Alexander in 2005.
