Both the federal and provincial governments recently announced funding for affordable housing.
In the Canadian government’s first budget in two years April 19, deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland announced that Budget 2021 includes an additional $2.5 billion over seven years for affordable housing. It will also reallocate $1.3 billion in existing funding to speed up the construction, repair, or support of 35,000 affordable housing units.

Alberta’s government will launch a new Temporary Rent Assistance Benefit for eligible Albertans on May 1.

Under the redesigned Rent Supplement Program, the new temporary benefit provides a subsidy for working households with low income or those between jobs. Support is available for up to two years to help tenants afford their rent while they stabilize or improve their situation.
