OLYMPIA, Wash. The Thurston County Health Department is trying a new strategy to get vaccines to the homeless population.
In a partnership between the City of Olympia, the Thurston County Health Department and local charities, volunteer nurses are heading to homeless encampments to administer the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to anyone who wants it.
Thurston County Public Health visited an encampment along Deschutes Parkway, not far from the state Capitol on Wednesday.
Thurston County looking to distribute 800 expiring vaccine doses by end of week

Good news for anyone hoping to get a Pfizer vaccine: Thurston County is looking to distribute about 800 doses set to expire by the end of the week.
South Puget Sound Community College is hosting a drive-thru clinic on Sunday to help distribute the expiring doses. All moms who get their shot on Sunday will be given flowers in celebration of Mother’s Day.
There is also a walk-up clinic at Thurston County’s Public Health building in Olympia running from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday. People receiving doses can expect the vaccination process to take roughly 30 minutes, an estimate which includes a 15-minute post-vaccine wait time.
