Chief minister-elect Himanta Biswa Sarma being feliciated by BJP’s Assam observer Narendra Singh Tomar in Guwahati on Sunday
GUWAHATI: Assam’s chief minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma’s life speaks volumes of how he wrote his destiny in his own way from a tender age. At the age of 52, he achieved it, but not without his due share of ups and downs.
Himanta made a mark early in his life as a child artiste in Assamese movies and went on to become the errand boy for Aasu leaders during anti-foreigner’s movement. In between he would double as a ball boy of Assam Police football team only to get himself a front row view of the game.
Assam’s CM-elect Himanta Biswa Sarma with Sarbananda Sonowal in Guwahati on Sunday
GUWAHATI: NDA’s kingmaker in the northeast and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma will be sworn in as Assam’s 15th chief minister on Monday.
The 52-year-old former Supreme Court advocate will be the state’s first chief minister from the Brahmin community. He will also be the first CM from lower Assam in over two decades after the late Bhumidhar Barman of Congress held the post for a brief period in 1996 following Hiteswar Saikia’s death.
The BJP legislature party on Sunday unanimously elected him as the leader of the party in the House in the presence of agriculture minister and BJP’s central observer Narendra Singh Tomar, which not only ended a six-day period of speculation over the CM’s face since the declaration of election results on May 2, but also Sarma’s long wait to reach the top post.
The first meeting of the state Cabinet will be held on Tuesday and the CM said the government will try to fulfil all pre-poll promises, which include making Assam flood-free.
On the National Register of Citizens (NRC), he said the government will favour 20% re-verification of documents in the districts that share a border with Bangladesh and 10% re-verification elsewhere. If the old draft of the NRC is found to be flawless during the re-verification process, we will go ahead with it. But if anomalies are detected, we will want the Supreme Court to see to it, he said.
The NRC of 1951 was updated in Assam under the direct monitoring of the apex court. Over 19 lakh people were left out of the draft.
