A federal district court judge ruled today that a lawsuit challenging a 2019 decision by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to dramatically reduce federal oversight and eliminate line speed limits at pig slaughterhouses can move forward. Sign Up Major Angus job fears have emerged over a decision to bring a three-day week into place at a Brechin abattoir. It follows the continuing suspension of a Chinese export licence after a Covid-19 outbreak shut the Quality Pork Limited plant in Brechin earlier this year. The move has been described as a “pivotal moment” for the future of Scotland’s pig farming industry. Plant bosses say the step is being taken in an attempt to stave off redundancies among the workforce.

Demonstration held calling for closure of north-east pig farm at centre of animal cruelty allegations © DCT Media Campaigners are calling for a north-east pig farm currently under investigation amid animal welfare concerns to be shut down. It comes after Animal Equity UK released graphic images of pigs suffering severe injuries and, in some instances, being hammered to death or bludgeoned against a concrete floor following an undercover investigation at the farm. Today, activists armed with signs and leaflets gathered to spread the word and encourage people to back their petition calling for the unit to be shut down. They collected about 100 signatures in two hours, and have also launched an online version which further asks for increased enforcement of animal welfare laws and better protection to be put in place for pigs.
