As per the priest of the temple and other religious gurus of the city, when Aurangzeb tried to damage this Shivlinga with his sword, blood came out whooshing from the linga following which the emperor decided not to damage any more temples.

The ‘snan’ marked the beginning of the month-long austerity period for ‘kalpwasis’, who would stay on the banks of Ganga till Maghi Purnima. PRAYAGRAJ: Braving bone-chilling cold and Covid-19 fears, 2.7 lakh devotees, including saints and ‘kalpwasis’, took a dip in Sangam the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj on Thursday on the occasion of Paush Purnima, the second auspicious ‘snan’ of Magh Mela. The devotees started trickling in since the crack of dawn amid heavy police bandobast. In fact, the Sangam noze had been buzzing with activities since Wednesday. Mela police, however, said the footfall was less as compared to Makar Sankranti. Ghats witnessed a major rush during wee hours, but the strength declined as the day progressed.

Migratory birds flock to Magh Mela ground on Thursday Prayagraj: In view of the bird flu outbreak, the forest department of Prayagraj has appealed to the pilgrims at the Magh Mela to refrain from feeding the migratory birds that flock to the Sangam area. The Indian Skimmer, locally known as Siberian bird, is one the main centres of attraction at Sangam. Pilgrims feed them sev (a snack). These birds can often be seen sitting on the palm of visitors and eating sev. So popular is this snack among the Siberian birds that they can be seen hovering on the boats and the banks of Ganga and Yamuna, and fighting among themselves to consume it.
