Need to protect migratory birds Updated: Updated: Share Article AAA Bird watchers and ornithologists have expressed concern over the decline in the arrival of migratory birds over the past five decades to wetlands in the delta region and other parts of the State. Speaking at a three-day programme on the occasion of the World Wetland Day 2021 at Point Calimere Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagapattinam district, organised by Tamil Nadu Forest Department and Biodiversity Conservation Foundation- India, S.Balachandran, Deputy Director, Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), deplored drop in arrival of migratory birds. It had gone done by about 70% in the last five decades. It was a high time to carry out a comprehensive study to figure out the reasons. Their arrival could be gradually increased by implementing various strategies. First, the threats faced by these birds should be checked.

Two persons have been arrested in connection with the death and remanded to 14 days judicial custody, the police said. Two of the accused involved in killing the elephant in Nilgiris have been arrested by Tamilnadu Forest Department. The resort involved has been sealed. According to the Forest Officials, the incident occurred on January 8, but it became known only after the video of the same started doing the rounds on Twitter. A team of forest officials apprehended two persons at the resort, including the owner, for the crime. Raymond Dean, the resort owner, and Prasath, a staffer, have been arrested. Another person involved in the incident is yet to be arrested, and officials are on the lookout. During the course of their investigation, videos of the incident were found in their phones.

A forest official said that a 50-year-old wild jumbo was noticed with injuries on its back in November and for the past two months they were trying to treat it. In December, they captured the injured jumbo seen with pus on the injured area and later provided treatment to that elephant and let it into the forest area.
