Joshimath, Uttarakhand – On Sunday morning, Rishi Prasad, 57, ran as fast as he could to save his son but he could reach the tunnel where his son was, massive boulders, trees and mud had already blocked its entrance.
Abhishek Panth, 24, was working in an under-construction tunnel near Tapovan Dam, at the confluence of Dhauliganga and Rishiganga Rivers – in Chamoli district about 280km (173 miles) east of Dehradun, capital of the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand.
Panth is among the dozens of people still trapped inside the 2km (1.24-mile) long tunnel, Aparna Kumar of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), which is a part of the rescue operations, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday.

Chamoli (Uttarakhand): A 13.2 MW small hydro project on the Rishiganga river was completely washed off due to the glacier burst in Uttarakhand on Sunday. The administration has, however, said that there is no threat of floods on the downstream, or to the nearby villages. Another project, Tapovan dam, was also washed off in the calamity that has resulted in the death of eight so far.

NTPC says Tapovan project partly damaged, monitoring situation
Part of an under-construction hydropower project of state-run power major NTPC has been damaged by the avalanche in Uttarakhand s Chamoli district on Sunday. The company has said that it is monitoring the situation continuously along with the district administration and police.
Part of the under-construction Tapovan Vishnugad hydropower project (520 MW) has faced damages while another privately-owned Rishi Ganga hydro project (130 MW) was completely devastated. An avalanche near Tapovan in Uttarakhand has damaged a part of our under-construction hydropower project in the region. While rescue operation is on, the situation is being monitored continuously with the help of district administration and police, NTPC said in a tweet.

New Delhi, Feb 09: The death toll from the Uttarakhand glacier disaster rose to 31 with five more bodies being recovered, officials said on Tuesday as multiple agencies raced against time to reach about 30 workers trapped inside a tunnel in a power project site and 175 people remained missing.

The missing people include those working at NTPC s 480 MW Tapovan-Vishnugad project and the 13.2 MW Rishiganga Hydel Project and villagers whose homes nearby were washed away.
A team of scientists, flown to Dehradun after the glacier burst in Uttarakhand, left for the Joshimath area on Monday for surveillance and reconnaissance.
