With boating season upon us, authorities are urging people to exercise caution on the lakes following a sinking incident in northern Minnesota.
It happened Friday on Lake Marquette, which is about one mile southwest of Bemidji. According to a release from the Beltrami County sheriff, a canoe capsized on the lake shortly after 3:00 p.m., leaving the three people aboard in potentially serious trouble.
Thankfully, the trio made it back to shore safely, the sheriff says. The release points out that all three were wearing Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) i.e. life jackets.
Boating Fatalities on the Increase Across Louisiana
At this same time last year, Louisiana had only reported two recreational boating fatalities. Fast forward to the year 2021 and already the state has seen seven such instances where boaters lost their lives on the state s waterways. Two of those fatalities have been reported in just the past week.
This has prompted officials with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division to ask us to remind you that safety on the water begins with you. And now, as the weather is becoming more and more conducive for outside activities that involve water the extra emphasis couldn t come at a better time.

CONCORD,NH - NH Fish and Game responded to a snowmobile accident Monday in Rumney at Route 25 and Sandhill Road.
Sharon Nelson, 59 of Dorchester, NH had been riding a snowmobile behind a friend when she attempted to cross Route 25 according to Fish and Game Office Gregory Jellison. She misjudged the trail and drove off the end of a large culvert, landing on an ice-covered brook according to Jellison.
