Alabama House Committee Advances Protest Bill After Changes

Alabama News Updated: Unique Dunston holds a sign during a protest of HB445 at the Alabama Statehouse in Montgomery, Ala.,(Mickey Welsh/via AP) MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Alabama lawmakers have advanced a revised bill that would stiffen penalties for participating in a riot, a proposal that had drawn criticism because of a broad definition of what could be considered a riot. The House Judiciary voted Tuesday to send the bill to the House floor. Republican Rep. Allen Treadaway, a retired Birmingham assistant police chief, said the measures are needed to crack down on violent behavior. Shay Farley, interim deputy policy officer for the southeast with Southern Poverty Law Center Action Fund, said this bill is clearly designed to instill fear in would-be protesters and silence dissent.

Alabama House committee delays bill that would expand definition of rioting

Alabama House committee delays bill that would expand definition of rioting The Montgomery Advertiser 3/9/2021 Brian Lyman, Montgomery Advertiser It was a lengthy discussion, heavy with the crimes of the past and the struggles of the present. And after about 90 minutes of debate, a legislative committee decided to keep it going.  The House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday delayed a vote on legislation from Rep. Allen Treadaway, R-Morris, that would expand the definition of rioting and punish cities that cut police budgets. Opponents said the definition of rioting in the legislation does not require an act to take place, and could make law enforcement the arbiters of what is and isn’t constitutionally-protected speech.

(WAFF) - There is a new billboard up in Albertville, calling for the removal of the rebel flag and relocation of the confederate monument. Community members in Marshall County started a petition in June of 2020 to let the Marshall County Commission know that they do not want the Confederacy to be honored at our courthouses. The petition has now reached over 3,450 signatures. Protest organizer Unique Dunston tells WAFF the billboard is another way of letting elected officials and community know that this issue will not just disappear. The Associated Press reported that Marshall County Commission Chairman James Hutcheson said, “Everybody’s getting tired,” and “People want to move on with their lives and move past this.”
