Nissan has unveiled the new 2022 Nissan Frontier midsize truck, which is set to go on sale in the US this summer. This bold-looking new truck replaces the D40 Frontier (we know it as the “Mother Trucker” Navara), which has been in the US since 2005. No typo there, 2005. North America did not get our current D23 Navara NP300, which was facelifted late last year, so this update is much needed there.
The platform has been retained, but the Frontier body is all new. As with most trucks, design is mostly focused on the face, and the Frontier features a square front end with a big grille (Frontier name above the new Nissan logo) and chiseled hood, framed by “precision interlocking” headlights.

Nissan has unveiled its 2022 Frontier pickup truck in a virtual press conference. The new Frontier features the engine and transmission introduced last year, an all-new exterior design, a new interior, and several world-first safety technologies.
Nissan started the small pickup truck revolution in the United States in 1959, with the introduction of the Datsun 220, and has since introduced firsts to the market in that category. The 1985 introduction of the Nissan Hardbody, replacing the Datsun 720, was a big step forward for the brand. Under the Nissan NEXT business plan, the Japanese automaker has taken the veils off the brand-new Frontier for the U.S. market. Scheduled to arrive at dealerships this summer for the 2022 model year, the mid-size pickup comes with best-in-class horsepower thanks to a V6 engine. 38 photos
Already introduced for the 2020 model year with 93 percent new or redesigned parts, the 2022 Frontier s 3.8-liter motor with direct injection cranks out 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet (381 Nm) of torque. The nine-speed automatic transmission, which comes standard, features a much wider gear range compared to the previous five-speeder for a smoother, more economical driving experience.
The previous model s 16-year production run will come to an end.
Way back in 1959, Nissan introduced the first compact pickup truck in the US. Sold as the Datsun 220, it was followed decades later by the Nissan Frontier. The second-generation Frontier has been on sale for a remarkable 16 years, but the new third-gen 2022 model has finally been revealed.
As you can see, the Frontier is a far bolder truck than the model it will replace. Boasting a powerful V6 engine, a modern cabin with an available nine-inch touchscreen, and many driver-assist technologies, it should provide far stiffer competition for the Ford Ranger than before.
