Originally published on April 16, 2021 3:16 pm The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board had already approved a calendar for the coming school year when Superintendent Sito Narcisse announced a proposal that would shorten summer vacation by roughly two weeks. While some praised Narcisse for his bold action, he was also flooded with community criticism. On Monday, nearly 600 teachers expressed their opposition Thursday night’s school board meeting included hours of public testimony both for and against the plan. Following public comments, board members decided not to offer a recommendation on the proposed calendar and said they needed more time to consider public feedback.

(WAFB) - One day after a planned sickout in East Baton Rouge Schools, Superintendent Sito Narcisse held a virtual town hall to address teachers’ and parents’ concerns. He said the pandemic just added one more obstacle for teachers to face while getting kids acclimated to the classroom. And while students are having to adjust constantly to keep everyone safe, Narcisse added he wants everyone to know they’re working on a plan moving forward in case schools are faced with another outbreak.

(WAFB) - We know that students in East Baton Rouge Parish could be starting classes for the 2021-2022 school year way earlier than expected, as part of a new ‘Smart Start Plan.’ Superintendent Dr. Sito Narcisse’s expressed his desire for students to start on July 28. But some parents, teachers, and board members say they have some concerns about the early start. Most people expect things to be back to normal when their children get ready for school next semester.
