MADISON, Wis. â The University of Wisconsin-Madison Athletic Department is responding to the guilty verdict in Derek Chauvinâs murder trial, calling it in a tweet on Wednesday âa moment when community is needed more than ever.â
The message, signed by outgoing Athletic Director Barry Alvarez and Badger head coaches, said: âNow is the time for us to connect. Honest conversations, holding each other accountable and forums to discuss race openly are ways our community can work to combat racial justice.â
âWhile the verdict brings this trial to a close,â the letter said, âour work to combat racial injustice is just beginning.

Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez formally retiring in June

Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez is formally resigning on June 30, 2021, after 32 years at the university, per an official press release.
Alvarez has presided over Badger athletics for the last 18 years. In that span, Wisconsin has won a total of 16 national titles and 74 conference regular season or tournament titles.
“It has been an honor to be a part of Wisconsin Athletics and I take great pride in all we have accomplished over the last three decades,” Alvarez said via the release. “From championships, to improvements on campus, to impacting thousands of student-athletes, it’s been a great ride. I’m grateful for the support, generosity, enthusiasm and loyalty of Badgers in the state of Wisconsin and beyond. Thank you.”
