Appropriating vs. appreciating Black fashion today: MSU students share insight

Modern-day trends such as hoop earrings, acrylic nails, bucket hats and lettuce-hem shirts are considered to be fashion staples in America. But not many are aware of the cultural significance behind their favorite accessories or that all these items, and more, originate from Black or African culture.
Acrylic nails date all the way back to origins in ancient Egypt, according to Bricks Magazine, and were first seen on the cover of a magazine being worn by a black woman. They then became prominent in the disco scene, being worn by stars such as Diana Ross and Donna Sum

They will be painted for the Crisfield Housing Authority basketball and tennis courts.
We are told The Crisfield Arts and Entertainment District was awarded a grant to fund the mural project this spring.
Artists were able to submit their mural designs last year and now they are looking for the community’s thoughts on a design.
The project manager said they are really excited to offer this art to the community, with the help of partnerships during this uncertain time.
“I think now as anytime its really important to collaborate with each other and let each other know that at the end of the day, we really want the best for the community, and want the best for our youth, wanna give them somewhere safe where they can play somewhere that inspires them,” Shelton Hawkins, project manager, said.
