The renovation of the basketball courts off Bateman Road is an accomplishment that many can take a bow for making it a reality. George Kneeland, the driving spirit bringing the courts back to life and making it a community park for all, deserves a debt of gratitude from all Islanders, and so do school, town and Police Department officials.
The Shelter Island Lions Club and its Foundation have also once again come through for Shelter Island, by organizing a funding campaign for Islanders to contribute to the steep costs of making the site attractive and welcoming for recreation and all leisure activities. Three announcements in a week signaled that the local political season is suddenly upon us.
Councilman Albert Dickson, a Democrat, told his colleagues and the public at the March 2 Town Board work session that he won’t seek a second term. The two major Island political parties soon after announced the candidacies of newcomers to politics who will challenge for a seats on the Town Board.
The Shelter Island Democratic Committee is putting up Brett Surerus for election to the board, and the Shelter Island Republican Committee announced that Margaret (Meg) Larsen is its choice in November’s election.
Councilwoman Amber Brach-Williams, a Republican who also serves as deputy town supervisor, is up for re-election this November, but the Democrats will only endorse Mr. Surerus for the board, said Democratic Party Chairwoman Heather Reylek.
Now is the time
Now, more than in any time in memory, people are suffering on Shelter Island, and need help. The government, through the Senior Center and Shelter Island Town Social Worker Lucille Buergers, and the school, through teachers’ and staff’s outreach to families in need spearheaded by School Nurse Mary Kanarvogel, are all helping. But more has to be done, and that’s where residents come in.
This holiday season, nonprofits that are lifelines to your neighbors need your help. The Lions Club, long before the pandemic and continuing now, has never flagged in its dedication to helping Islanders, and The Shelter Island Action Alliance, formed in the early days of the pandemic, has helped show a way to lifting us all up.
