Bengal Assembly polls 2021: Voting begins for 7th phase amid rising Covid cases

Stray incidents of violence were reported Monday from some areas where voting is underway for the seventh phase of the assembly elections in Bengal, though the overall polling process has been peaceful. Polling began at 7 am on Monday for 34 seats in the seventh phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal, amid tight security and a rampaging second wave of COVID-19. Till 1pm, 55.12 per cent voter turnout was recorded.  Long queues were seen outside most polling booths where voting is underway adhering to Covid protocols. Over 86 lakh voters will decide the political fate of 284 candidates in this phase. Security measures have been heightened in view of the violence in the previous phases, particularly the death of five people in Cooch Behar in the fourth round of polling on April 10, an Election Commission official said.

450 Kolkata, April 25 A record 796 companies of the central forces will be deployed to ensure smooth polling in 34 Assembly seats in West Bengal tomorrow. Thirty-four constituencies, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s home turf Bhabanipur, is going to polls in the seventh phase. According to the original schedule, polling in this phase was supposed to be held in 36 seats. However, elections for Samserganj and Jangipur were countermanded following the death of candidates contesting from these two constituencies. Polling in Jangipur and Samserganj will now take place on May 16. A total of 86,78,221 voters 44,44,634 men and 42,33,358 women and 229 from the third gender – form the electorate in the 34 constituencies spread across Malda (six), Kolkata Dakshin (four), Murshidabad (nine), Paschim Bardhaman (nine) and Dakshin Dinajpur (six) districts.

The Murshidabad district reported the highest turnout so far with 19.53 per cent turnout, while Kolkata Sourth reported the lowest so far with 13.07 per cent. A turnout of 18.77 per cent was reported in Dakshin Dinajpur, 18.87 in Malda, and 17.24 in Paschim Bardhaman. A total of 268 candidates, including 37 women are in the fray in this phase of the West Bengal elections.

Among the districts, Murshidabad maintained the highest turnout with 60.53 percent, while Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda registered 58.96 per cent and 58.16 per cent respectively. Bhagabangola recorded the highest percentage of voters among all constituencies at 62.65 per cent while Raninagar and Bhowanipore recorded 62.56 per cent and 41.97 per cent respectively.
