Hattiesburg s mask mandate will continue through May 15, Mayor Toby Barker said this week.
Barker, in his COVID-19 briefing Monday, said that if case numbers and hospitalizations remain low, restrictions will be phased out. We understand we’re coming out of Easter, and the impact of those gatherings may not be seen for a couple of weeks, Barker said. Also, both of our universities Southern Miss and William Carey only have a few weeks left in their spring semester and trimester, respectively. Because of this, we are going to extend the mask mandate one more time. This will get us past the end of both universities’ spring terms and their commencement ceremonies. If numbers both in active cases and hospitalizations remain low, we will begin phasing out mask mandates.

To honor healthcare workers and all they have done, the city is encouraging people to help âPaint the Town Redâ this Friday.
Mayor Toby Barker suggested a few ways people can participate.
âPeople can wear red, they can put red on their doors and mailboxes, they can post on social media letting people know the healthcare sector is appreciated particularly as we hit this one-year anniversary of COVID,â Barker said.
