WAPS eyes $63M needs, new referendum - Winona Post > Article

WAPS eyes $63M needs, new referendum (5/26/2021)   Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) Board members and administrators will soon discuss the possibility of pursuing another referendum for building projects. A vote could be held as early as November of this year. The conversation will follow board members having recently received a study of the district’s facilities that identified about $63 million in deferred maintenance costs.  Superintendent Annette Freiheit said at the School Board’s May 20 meeting that funding from the 2018 building project referendum will expire in 2023, and a positive vote would be needed in November 2021, February 2022, August 2022, or November 2022 to replace it.

He said that’s a credit to the district’s nutrition staff for problem-solving for the past year-plus.  Casper said the district has continued free meal distribution throughout the school year. Meals throughout the summer will be distributed at Goodview and St. Stan’s elementary schools, the Winona Middle and High Schools, and the Winona Area Learning Center. The summer lunch bus will move to the Bob Welch Aquatic Center due to construction at the library.

WAPS Set to Resume Full-Time In-Person Learning Across All Grades Thursday

It’s the first time WAPS has offered in-person instruction for all students since the pandemic began.   “This is a celebration of the community following all of the protocols. Avoiding large groups when possible, wearing masks staying home when you’re sick,” said WAPS Communications Coordinator John Casper. “We really have minimized the spike. I know Minnesota is kind of seeing a rise in other areas but so far in Winona that hasn’t happened and we are really grateful for that.”   The return comes as Minnesota has seen its COVID-19 case rate increase over the past month, with younger people being the driving force behind the increase, according to health officials.
