The government will boost extraordinary support for agriculture by €3.8 million in response to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sector. Applicants will be able to start filing their requests mid-March, and the move follows a relaxation of the European Union s state aid framework.
The aid increase, approved by the cabinet Thursday after being proposed by rural affairs minister Urmas Kruuse (Reform) will bring total support for agriculture to €15.8 million in total, i.e. a 32 percent increase.
The extraordinary (in the sense of outside normal state budget procedures – ed.) funds will come out of Rural Development Foundation (MES) coffers, BNS reports.

Forty companies involved in food processing are the latest recipients of state aid prompted by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
The companies will between them receive €523,900 in aid, channeled via the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (PRIA), as a component of the already-budgeted rural development plan for 2014-2020.
PRIA falls under the rural affairs ministry s purview.
PRIA spokesperson Rauno Aun said via press release that: We believe this support will help food processing companies overcome the damages caused by the crisis and carry out their promotion plans.
The lion s share of the aid is going to Harju and Tartu counties, two of the currently most-affected regions in the pandemic, with €188,000 and €89,000 going respectively to companies there.
Birmingham Public Library executive director Floyd Council has resigned.
Council, who was named executive director in 2017, resigned Tuesday after consultation âwith my doctor, my pastor and my attorney,â he wrote to BPL employees.Â
Council didnât give a specific reason for leaving and said he would offer no comments about the culture at the library or strategic future of BPL but prays âthat the City and City Council will make viable plans to support the library system for the next 100 years.âÂ
On Wednesday, the BPL board named Janine Langston interim executive director. Langston has served as deputy director since 2019 and is a 34-year employee of the Birmingham Library.
