A RECORD number of businesses have been set up in York and North Yorkshire during the past year. Latest figures show that 8,200 new companies were registered in 2020, compared to 7,260 during 2019 - an increase of 12.9 per cent. This was a new record high for the third year in a row, bringing the total number of registered companies in North Yorkshire to 58,526, up from 54,481 at the end of 2019, a 7.4 per cent growth. During the same period, 4,289 companies in North Yorkshire were dissolved.

There were 15,534 new companies registered in the county in 2020, a 2.4 per cent rise on the number formed 2019. Hampshire had a total of 121,331 registered companies at the end of the year, up 5.7 per cent on 2019. The figures from the Inform Direct Review of Company Formations are based on data from Companies House and the Office for National Statistics. Southampton saw the highest number of new businesses at 2,180, followed by Portsmouth (1,845) and East Hampshire (1,814).
Entrepreneurs in Oxfordshire defied the economic challenges posed by the pandemic to set up a record number of new businesses last year. Latest figures show that more new businesses were established in Oxfordshire during 2020 than in any previous year – hitting a new record high for the second year in a row. Some 5,363 new companies were registered in the county compared to 5,087 during 2019, representing an increase of 5.4%. This brings the total number of registered companies in Oxfordshire to 45,071, up from 42,461 at the end of 2019, which equates to 6.1% growth. New figures show that 1,276 new companies were registered in Cherwell last year, bringing the total number of companies in the area to 10,114.

In Oxford, over the same period, 1,257 new companies were registered, with 1,131 registered in South Oxfordshire plus 868 in West Oxfordshire and 815 in the Vale of White Horse.
