Court protects Amazon Prime Video India Commercial head Aparna Purohit from arrest in ‘Tandav’ web series row
The Supreme Court on Friday said the government’s new rules to regulate OTT (over-the-top) platforms lacked teeth to punish violators or to screen offensive content even as it protected Amazon Prime Video India Commercial head Aparna Purohit from arrest in the ‘Tandav’ web series row.

One of the clauses requires all significant social media intermediaries - i.e. those having more than five million users to voluntarily verify their accounts by using an appropriate mechanism including the active Indian mobile number of such users. It also requires that any user who has voluntarily verified his/her account shall be provided with a demonstrable and visible mark of verification, which shall be visible to all users of the service.

Hearing based on Amazon Prime's commercial head Aparna Purohit’s plea against Allahabad HC decision to deny her pre-arrest bail in connection with probe into web series ‘Tandav’
Justice Ashok Bhushan said that there should be screening. There is pornography in some films. Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta told the Bench that there are filthy abuses as well. The court asked the Centre to submit the guidelines on the regulations tomorrow.
