Construction has begun to make areas around the downtown Glen Ellyn Civic Center a more inviting place to walk or dine outdoors.
Brick pathways dressed up with public art and lighting will usher downtown visitors to and from a new parking garage as part of an ongoing project to turn the Civic Center into a pedestrian-friendly municipal campus.

Andreas “Andy” Koutsoudakis lived a life surrounded by his diner’s regulars, but he died alone, in between check-ins by his nurse at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island. He was 59. It was March 27, 2020, roughly 30,000 New York City pandemic deaths ago.
“I could have shut it down and everyone would’ve understood, but I decided to keep it going,” says Koutsoudakis’s only child, Andreas (“Andy Jr.”). With wet eyes, he sighs: “Nobody misses the old restaurant more than me, because it had my father.”

A metrotome sounds like a more pleasant device than it is. A switchblade of sorts, it was once used to treat fertility issues. A doctor would push the metrotome into a woman’s uterus, press the handle, and release the blade; when he pulled it out, it cut through one side of her cervix. After that, the doctor reinserted the tool and repeated the procedure on the other side. Eventually a version of the metrotome was made with a double blade that could cut both sides of the cervix at once a supposed improvement on the original design.

Glen Ellyn officials have spent at least two years planning for downtown revitalization efforts, but there are still unanswered questions about the timing of the streetscape project.
Trustees could decide next month whether to move ahead with the multimillion-dollar project in May by first replacing underground utilities serving restaurants and shops in the south end of the downtown. The below-ground infrastructure improvements would launch a multiyear effort to bolster the central business district with reconfigured parking, new sidewalks, trees, lighting, and midblock crosswalks.
