Elizabethton and Carter County discuss developing Hampton Watershed bike trails

ELIZABETHTON — The further development of a mountain bike riding park brought together leaders from Elizabethton and Carter County on Wednesday afternoon for an exploratory session. Over the past several years, Elizabethton has slowly developed a small system of bike trails in a 238-acre hilly watershed property the city owns in Hampton. Although the property is several miles from Elizabethton, the city owns it because the springs flowing in the area provide over half of the city’s drinking water. The watershed above the springs were purchased to protect the area from development and pollution. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department has begun developing mountain bike trails on the property, and has expanded the trails by renting 52.75 acres of undeveloped land from adjacent Doe River Gorge Ministries. The result is the potential development of several miles of bike trail on elevations ranging from 1,800 feet to 3,100 feet that could be made into loops easy enough

Elizabethton groups come together to plant wildflowers along Tweetsie Trail

ELIZABETHTON — Several agencies came together to do a little springtime planting of flowers next to the Tweetsie Trail on Thursday afternoon. The Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department, Keep Carter County Beautiful, and Main Street Elizabethton worked on several plots, including a stretch at the western edge of downtown next to the restored Estep Coal building, and several plots near Tetrick Funeral Home. Ed Basconi, a member of the board of directors of Keep Carter County Beautiful said the plot near Estep Coal will be planted with five different kinds of hardy wildflowers. He said they will include cosmos, yellow cosmos, Indian blanket and zinnias. He said they were chosen because they will be growing in bright sunshine much of the day and they are hardy enough to stand occasionally being run over by bicycles or foot traffic.

Chief Shaw discusses safety rules for Tweetsie Trail

ELIZABETHTON — The coming of spring brings a busy time for the Tweetsie Trail. Lots of bicyclists and pedestrians have returned to the trail, as well as some new users of the trail. With the renewed activity, the Johnson City Press asked Elizabethton Police Chief Jason Shaw to go over the rules of the road for the trail, since much of the trail is inside Elizabeth-ton’s city limits. “The Tweetsie Trail is a wonderful asset in our community and it is heavily used, but it does cross some very busy streets,” Shaw said. He said there is a stop sign on the trail at each intersection with a street or highway. He said the stops signs are there “to signal to the trail user to stop prior to crossing the roadway.” Shaw said that those on the trail “should make sure they can cross the street safely before attempting to enter the crosswalk, and always keep in mind there are distracted drivers and those that may not be watching out for trail users.”
