Brave head shave raises â¬10k for cancer charity
A BELCLARE woman has raised over â¬10,000 for a local charity after shaving off her luscious locks as part of a birthday fundraiser.
Tracie Higgins, who turned 33 earlier this month, has been a driving force in organising an annual summer barbeque in aid of Tuam Cancer Care in recent years. The annual night of music and food at The Man of Aran pub High Street has raised over â¬100,000 for the charity since 2007. However, with all pubs closed due to the pandemic, Tracie decided to come up with another way of supporting the charity.

It was the Monday morning before Thanksgiving when a police officer showed up on Tracie Higginsâs doorstep and handed a $439 fine to her teenage son for missing too many days of remote school during the pandemic.
But the bulk of her son Markâs repeated absences, the Wisconsin mother protested, were the result of faulty school technology, including a Chromebook that wouldnât charge. Debra Pratt, also of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, faced a similar situation this school year with her son Jason, who was fined for racking up 28 absences that the school district marked as unexcused â including the same day in late September that he tested positive for Covid-19.
