Ripton s fate lies with ACSD voters

Thu, 02/25/2021 - 3:20pm meganj By:  John Flowers This idea that (Ripton Elementary School) is worth ‘saving’ at any cost is elitist. When our taxes go up, how will our low-income neighbors afford to live here? Ripton residents Heather and Joe Durante RIPTON You’ll forgive Ripton residents this year for being more preoccupied by their neighbors’ town meeting results than their own. That’s because residents in Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge on March 2 will decide whether to endorse Ripton’s bid to withdraw from the Addison Central School District. For David Major, the former Westminster School Board chairman who helped organize a petition for his town to vote Jan. 5 on secession, it is fundamentally a question of local control. Westminster has already collaborated with its neighboring towns on such services as food service and special education, Major said, and has seen no added benefit to being forced to combine school boards with Athens and Grafton under Act 46.
