The results of the Brighton and Hove by-elections were announced yesterday at the Hilton Brighton Metropole. The by-elections were called after the resignation of Labour’s Tracey Hill in Hollingdean and Stanmer, and Conservative Lee Wares in Patcham. New Green councillor Zoe John took the Hollingdean and Stanmer seat for her party in a triumphant victory over Labour. Newly-elected Cllr John said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have been elected as a new Green councillor for Hollingdean and Stanmer ward. I cannot wait to get to work joining Cllr Martin Osborne to represent my community and to continue to grow the amazing work he has already been doing.

THOUSANDS of people across the city took to the polls yesterday as voting began to replace two councillors. Local elections to decide district councillors took place across the country, with residents in Brighton voting in two by-elections. On what has been dubbed Super Thursday, polling stations opened at 7am across Great Britain in the largest test of political opinion outside a General Election, with the future of the Labour Party and the state of the Union among the key issues. Traditionally, local government elections take place every four years with the most recent city-wide local election for Brighton and Hove taking place in May 2019.

THE GREENS have taken another seat on Brighton and Hove City Council The Hollingdean and Stanmer by-election has been won by Green candidate Zoe John, who received 1,542 votes. The seat was previously held by Labour until the resignation of Tracey Hill earlier this year. Labour’s candidate in this by-election, Leila Erin-Jenkins, received 1,262 votes. Meanwhile, the Conservatives managed to hold on to Patcham. Their candidate, Anne Meadows, received 2,011 votes.
