Adbusters and the roots of the contemporary left
On November 15, 2011, just outside a boarded-up vacant lot in Lower Manhattan, several NYPD officers held down a protester and beat him with batons while a number of onlookers, including the actor Frances McDormand, chanted “Shame, shame, shame.” (It was the first time I’d seen such an assault; I was working for
Variety and on the lookout for quotable celebrities.) The protesters had gathered at the request of the Estonian-Canadian documentarian and activist Kalle Lasn, the charismatic founder and primary creative force behind the glossy magazine
Adbusters. They had set up tents in Zuccotti Park and declared themselves Occupy Wall Street. This was not quite the second month of the occupation; it had begun on September 17, Lasn’s mother’s birthday.

THE DUP has been criticised for snubbing a Stormont committee meeting as part of its plan to undermine the Irish Sea border.
The assembly s Executive Committee yesterday heard from MPs, as well as TDs and senators from the Republic s Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
But committee chairman Colin McGrath said he had been informed that members of the DUP would not be attending the segment of the meeting dealing with Brexit and the protocol, which has led to regulatory checks on goods arriving from Britain.

Blues striker Aaron Drinan played the first 52 minutes as a Republic of Ireland U21s side beat an experienced Ireland Amateurs team 1-0 in a training game at Whitehall last night.
The game, won by a first-half goal scored by Shamrock Rovers’ Brandon Kavanagh, followed a training camp at the FAI National Training Centre in Abbotstown as the squad prepare for a European Championships qualifier against Luxembourg in March.
Drinan was the only English-based player involved with the Blues having given him permission to take part.
The 20-year-old joined Town in January 2018 from Waterford having previously spent time with hometown club Cork City.

ROTHERHAM MADE UP ground on fellow Championship strugglers Derby as they claimed a vital 3-0 win.
Wayne Rooney’s Derby had picked up three wins in-a-row since losing the reverse fixture at Pride Park which had put a gap of five points between the two struggling outfits.
That cushion looked like being maintained before three goals in the last 14 minutes swung it emphatically the Millers’ way, leaving them just two points from safety.
