Virtual Wine Event Addresses COVID-19, Climate Change

Meeting COVID-19 requirements was a sobering task for New York state wineries and grape growers, but some found that changes such as requiring reservations and offering a la carte menus boosted business, according to a survey presented at last month’s virtual Business, Enology, Viticulture New York conference, held March 3-5. Hosted by Cornell’s Extension Enology Lab and Finger Lakes Grape Program in partnership with the New York Wine and Grape Foundation, this year’s event drew 471 attendees from across 12 states and Canada. One of the conference’s most popular events was a workshop reflecting on how COVID-19 tasting room changes impacted customer satisfaction and purchasing habits.

City of Salina mask mandate stays in place after split 2-2 vote

After a 2-2 vote, the mask mandate for the City of Salina will continue. As it was a topic that concerned many of the citizens who attended the Salina City Commission meeting Monday, the discussion on the mandate was moved up to the first action item of the agenda. The commission heard an update about COVID-19, including infection rates and vaccination rates, from Saline County Health Officer and Health Department Director Jason Tiller. Several people in attendance at the City-County Building and at the meeting online voiced their opposition to continuing the mandate while others attending online asked the commission to continue with the mandate.

On the women’s side, Kimberley Owens placed 18th in the 100m dash with a time of 12.78. Saidah Hardwick then placed 22nd 200m dash with a 26.37. Harwick wasn’t finished and placed 12th in the 400m race with a time 59.62. Kylie Dahlberg would continue the momentum finishing 10th in the 800m race with a time of 2:19.09. Adie Bjerkness just finished behind Dahlberg in the 800m race in 16th with a time of 2:22.54. Dahlberg wasn’t through put a strong time up in the 1500m race finishing 4th with a time of 4:44.25. Janet Kwambai placing just behind Dahlberg finished 9th with a 4:46.18. Hardwick also placed 1st in the high jump with a leap of 1.50m.

City commission receives health update, approves project bid

The city commission met Monday to receive a health update, consider awarding a bid for a project at Kenwood Cove and discuss offering general obligation bonds for future projects.   There were only 66 new cases of COVID-19 in the last two weeks, according to county health officer Jason Tiller, which he noted as a  significant amount of progress.”  Regarding vaccines, he said about 11,000 people who live and work in Saline County will be vaccinated by the end of the week. Tiller expects the rate of vaccinations to rise rapidly in the next few weeks as more are made available.  He added that Gov. Laura Kelly announced minutes earlier that Kansas would move to Phases 3 and 4 of the vaccination process starting March 22.
