The Oakland A’s are having a weird month. They’re still in playoff position, but you wouldn’t know it from reading the sky-is-falling comment threads here on Athletics Nation. The Mariners just humbled them three days in a row to climb back into the Wild Card race, but then Seattle traded away their closer today. Also Seattle has an atrocious minus-49 run differential, which either matters or doesn’t depending on your chosen narrative at that moment.
Now the A’s head into some interleague action, which isn’t a good thing because the NL West is the best division in baseball right now. On Tuesday they’ll face the third-place San Diego Padres, who have the eight-best record in MLB (1.5 games above the A’s). Both clubs made trades in the last couple days, with the Padres getting All-Star hitter

MIAMI (AP) Fernando Tatís Jr. hit his NL-leading 30th homer for an early lead but the Miami Marlins rallied late and defeated the San Diego Padres 3-2 Saturday night.
Jesús Aguilar lined a go-ahead, two-run single to center with one out in the seventh inning after reliever Tim Hill (5-5) walked pinch hitter Sandy León and allowed consecutive singles to Miguel Rojas and Starling Marte. Aguilar’s single scored pinch runner Magneuris Sierra and Rojas.

Rookie Braxton Garrett struck out a career-high 10 batters and Jesus Aguilar drilled a two-run, go-ahead single in the seventh inning, leading the host Miami Marlins to a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.
The Padres, who had their three-game win streak snapped, got solo homers from Fernando Tatis Jr. and rookie pitcher Ryan Weathers. Tatis leads the National League with 30 homers.
Aguilar, who tops the NL with 71 RBIs, powered Miami to just its third win in 10 post-All-Star-break games.
Garrett (1-1) allowed just four hits, one walk and two runs in seven innings for his second big-league win.

Winless in his previous three starts, Musgrove (6-7) allowed two runs and six hits, struck out four and walked one.
Trent Grisham had two hits and an RBI for the Padres, who have won the first two of the four-game series.
NL home run leader Fernando Tatís Jr. pinch hit in the ninth and was retired on a drive to deep center.
Padres manager Jayce Tingler rested the All-Star shortstop, saying he is trying to keep his players as fresh as possible.

“The last couple of weeks I’m trying to find that feel with my pitches,” Musgrove said. “It could have turned into a tough outing, a short outing but I felt I did a good job of slowing it down, making the adjustments I needed to and I felt I finished strong those last three innings.
