People queued up at the gates of the Dunedin Botanic Garden to take a whiff of the city s famously stinky plant.
About 50 people were already lined up at 8am on Saturday to check out the corpse plant (Amorphophallus titanum), which began to flower on Friday for just the second time.
Stuff the plant flowered on Friday at 1pm and will be fully open within hours. That opening would coincide with an increasing pungent smell, which was trying to mimic a dead animal .

Dunedin s corpse plant bloomed on Friday and is expected to attract a large crowd. The colour of the flower would also change in a short space of time, he said. It is all about trying to attract pollinators. ’ Bishop said staff planned to pollinate the plant with pollen taken and stored from it the last time it flowered. Hopefully in about six months time we will get a bit of seed off it. ’

For the second time in the 13 years it has been there, the corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) is expected to bloom.
Winter Garden plant collection curator Stephen Bishop said the corpse flower had started to produce a rare and odorous bloom but exactly when it would open was difficult to predict.
At this stage it seemed as if it would bloom in mid-January. The flower would last only 24 to 36 hours. Amorphophallus titanum has one of the world s largest flowers and is well known for the pungent fragrance it produces after the flower opens, he said.
