Balboa Park Carousel Reopens After Covid Closure – NBC 7 San Diego

Balboa Park s Automotive Museum flexes fundraising muscle ahead of big expansion plan

Print Six months from now, the San Diego Automotive Museum will go to the region’s most generous benefactors with a large ask: Give us millions to nearly double the footprint of our second-class facility. It’s a substantial ask for a nonprofit with a not-so-great reputation in philanthropic circles. That’s why the classic fixer-upper is anxious to prove that it can put to good use more than $1.3 million in recently donated funds and improvements. This week, the institution said it received a $1 million gift from Point Loma resident and patron of the arts Dorothea Laub, whose primary aim is to make the overall guest experience better right now.

Iconic Balboa Park tree, fenced off since 1989, now has a viewing platform

Print If trees could talk, the celebrated 109-year-old Moreton Bay fig just north of the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park would say, “Welcome back.” Friday, on Arbor Day, the nonprofit group Friends of Balboa Park formally handed over to the citizens of San Diego an elevated tree-viewing platform and all new fencing in a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Mayor Todd Gloria, City Councilman Stephen Whitburn, project donors and other park advocates. The just-completed structure, in the works since late 2016, provides members of the public with their first opportunity in 32 years to sit or stand beneath the big fig’s impressive canopy and do so in a way that does not cause harm to what many describe as a horticultural wonder.
