Supporting First Nations communities through stroke recovery

Date Time Supporting First Nations communities through stroke recovery A new resource to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people live well after stroke, has been launched as part of National Stroke Week (Aug 2 – 8). Our Stroke Journey has been developed by Stroke Foundation with the support of survivors of stroke and their families, health professionals, stroke researchers, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations. It is an important resource because Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are twice as likely to be hospitalised with stroke than non-indigenous Australians and are likely to have strokes at a much younger age. Our Stroke Journey provides information to empower Indigenous Australians through their treatment and care and improve the recovery journey and outcomes.

Bourke Children’s Services general manager, Prue Ritchie, who runs the area’s Connected Beginnings project, said her organisation worked with the local preschool provider to boost enrolments by 180 per cent by changing the model on offer to parents.

The chair of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council Anne Dennis said the funding would provide more certainty over land claims. At the present rate, though, it would still take 100 years before existing claims were resolved. The funding includes $6 million to increase the skills of local Aboriginal land councils so their claims on unused and unoccupied Crown land will be resolved faster by negotiating agreements. This is a quicker route than the often decades-long determination process.

College of Surgeons launches program for Indigenous surgeons

Date Time College of Surgeons launches program for Indigenous surgeons The program aims to reduce the professional health workforce inequity faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. While there are over 83,000 doctors registered to practice in Australia, fewer than 400 are Indigenous. This is despite over 760,000 people in Australia identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. “In Australia and New Zealand we have a severe shortage of Indigenous surgeons and we need to do everything we can to change this disproportionate under-representation,” said Dr Sally Langley, RACS President. “The College is committed to addressing this health discrepancy and the program will support this by encouraging and actively recruiting medical students and recent graduates into surgery.”
