Some of the harness racing horsemen in the backstretch at Pompano Park Wednesday morning (March 3) received a pleasant visit from representatives of the Florida Chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association.
Chapter president Steve Wolf and chapter national director and treasurer Thomas H. Hicks were visiting certain stables and presenting awards from last season that were not given out due to the pandemic.
“We held off hoping we could do a presentation event,” said Steve Wolf, “That did not work out and Tom Hicks said let’s go to the backstretch and start giving out the trophies and I agreed.”

Regarding “Answers on outages,” (A10, Feb. 25). While we’re scrambling to point fingers at who’s to blame, let’s not ignore the three fingers pointing back at us. Texas voters have by and large bought into the myth of deregulation. It’s a mantra for politicians all too willing to exploit it for power and profit.
The United States Harness Writers Association (USHWA), harness racing’s leading group of industry communicators, held its annual Directors and Membership meetings on Feb. 20 and 21 virtually using the Zoom technology, as the group’s annual “weekend” including these meetings and culminating in the Dan Patch Awards banquet had to be cancelled due to the health pandemic.
Dan Patch award winners were honoured through a virtual “Dan Patch Awards” program before a Saturday night card at The Meadowlands in January. That effort was chaired by Gordon Waterstone, and was brought to fruition largely through the efforts of Jason Settlemoir, Jeff Gural, and many members of The Meadowlands’ communications office. The show was watched through The Meadowlands’ signal, and through a number of USHWA and other social media platforms, which generated much viewing and engagement.
