Pet adoptions spiked when more people started working from home. Now that the pandemic is subsiding, some national trends found these “pandemic pets” were returning to shelters. But that’s not the case in Iowa.
A grant from Petco Love and BOBS from Skechers will enable the Animal Rescue League of Iowa to provide veterinary services to hundreds of pets, officials with the nonprofit said Wednesday.
In a news conference at the Skechers outlet in West Des Moines, ARL Chief Executive Officer Tom Colvin and his 11-year-old French bulldog Reese met with local representatives of Skechers and Petco to accept the $60,000 grant.
Joe Stafford, director of animal services for ARL, said the grant will assist the organization in microchipping, vaccinating, and spaying or neutering pets whose owners are struggling with financial hardship. Families have been struggling through this pandemic and have been unable to provide veterinary care for sick or injured animals and we’re able to use these funds to help those families as well as provide temporary boarding in certain circumstances when the family is experiencing a crisis, he said.
