Ogun worries over smoking habit among students

By Tue Jun 01 2021 Ogun State government yesterday expressed worry over the prevalence of smoking among secondary school students in the state. To this end, the government said it has intensified campaigns against drug abuse and cigarette smoking by students of public and private schools in the state. The state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, lamented that 3,200 young children and teenagers under 18 smoke their first cigarette while more than 2,100 young adults become daily smokers. Coker disclosed this while addressing journalists to kick-start an awareness campaign against smoking to mark the 2021 World No Tobacco Day in Abeokuta, the state capital. She said the Ministry of Health through the Ogun State Drug Control Committee (OSDCC) has been engaging secondary school students across the state to discourage them from smoking and the use of illicit drugs.

The equipment included 15 ICU beds, an incubator, children cribs, a generator and a phototherapy machine. Czech Republic Ambassador to Nigeria, Marek Skolil, while handing over the equipment to the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, in his office at Oke-Mosan in Abeokuta, expressed his home government’s delight to support and partner the state government, particularly in the area of health development. Skolil added that the Czech government was concerned about how Nigeria, being the centrepiece of the regional architecture of the African continent, was not developing not only in terms of infrastructure but also in terms of human and social well-being.

Water: Ogun Govt. assures residents of quality health care On Kindly Share This Story: Ogun State Government on Thursday assured residents of qualitative health care delivery, in spite of the dwindling revenue occasioned by the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is contained in a statement jointly signed by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, and the Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care Board, Dr Elijah Ogunsola, in Abeokuta. The state government noted that it had made a significant investment in primary health care by providing consistent availability of basic amenities such as potable water and constant power supply.
