Hundreds of people attend successful vintage day at Town Gardens

Town Gardens stepped back to the forties and fifties with an afternoon of jive and swing. Hundreds turned up to the vintage picnic, organised by dancers Helen Mansell and Gavin Taulbut, many of them in period costume. Rain might have dampened the dancers but it failed to stop people from travelling miles to take part. Helen said: “It was hectic but a lot of people helped out. From our dance community, we thought there would be lots here as our family and friends from Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire and Devon have come. “It was a lot of running around and Gavin manned the gates so we didn’t had much time to dance on the dancefloor.”

Kill the Bill protestors gather in Regent Circus for third demonstration

A SMALL band of protesters gathered for the third time in Regent Circus as part of a demonstration against a bill to impose new restrictions on protests. Around 20 people met on Saturday afternoon to show their opposition to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. The proposed legislation would give officers more powers to crack down on any peaceful protest deemed a public nuisance. The protest was part of a national day of action and had no official organiser in Swindon. Holding placards and banners, participants were encouraged to speak out during the protest and share their opinions. Linda Lee, from West Swindon said: “I’m really concerned about the effect of this bill on everybody.

Kill the Bill protest against new crime law planned today in Regent Circus

A PROTEST against the government s crackdown on protests will be held outside Regent Circus this afternoon. Demonstrations against a controversial bill which allows police to criminalise non-violent protesting that could be considered a public nuisance  have been seen across the country in the last week - and one will be coming to Swindon later today. Though justice secretary Robert Buckland argued that those upset with part of the new legislation have either not read it or misunderstood it. He said: There is a lot of misleading information being spread about reforms to the law of public nuisance and protests contained as part of the Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Bill that I introduced recently.
