WWII pilot Del Tiedeman of Calif dies at 100

(Tribune News Service) Even among revered members of the North Bay s vastly diminished corps of World War II combat veterans, Del Tiedeman of Healdsburg stood out with his simple elegance and his kind nature and palpable gratitude for life to his many young comrades in uniform who sacrificed all. Tiedeman died Thursday, about three weeks after he fractured a shoulder in a fall. The long-retired propane industry executive turned 100 last June and beamed all through a birthday salute in Healdsburg that boasted a full-blown, pandemic-era parade and a flyover by a restored WWII-era aircraft.

Looking back at Barrow s Chetwynde School s successful moments in the 1990s

A Barrow school s tremendous GCSE results in 1992 were just the tip of the iceberg as far as successes went for its pupils. Results from Chetwynde School, at that time a fee-paying, independent school, were on a par with the prestigious Westminster School, according to a report in The Mail in September that year. Chetwynde’s headteacher, Margaret Stones, said: “It’s a remarkable achievement. The pass rate is 100 per cent. We’re up there with the best of them.” A grade G counts as a pass, but none of the 43 Chetwynde pupils got anything less than E. Nine out of 10 pupils took eight or more subjects and 95 per cent of passes were at A, B or C – twice the national average.

By Reader s letter Letters postbag Artist s impression of the proposed new St George s Field car park - one of three planned for York It was interesting to read Cllr Crawshaw’s letter (Wait 40 years - then get three car parks at once, February 16). Labour pretends to support the climate emergency, but supports increasing road capacity, and seems opposed to an overall reduction in parking spaces at Castle Gateway. What matters is reducing the number of cars coming into York, not the shape of the car parks! The fact that Labour are trying to hide is that the Castle Gateway project will see an overall reduction in parking spaces within the city centre, even with the new car park. Coupled with the big improvements in cycling delivered for York council under Councillor D’Agorne, Greens with their coalition partners are delivering big improvements here for York.
