New York Mets President Sandy Alderson had a busy week.
At 4:30 p.m. last Tuesday, Alderson waiting his turn to speak before an audience of both City of Syracuse and Onondaga County officials, was participating in dedication ceremonies of $25 million renovations of NBT Bank Stadium.
This in all likelihood wasn t his first or will this be Alderson s last appearance requiring he be handed gold-looking scissors, and to be among a group to cut a ribbon, and symbolically open a facility.
Reviewing his notes and adding to his soon to be delivered remarks, following Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, Alderson had much to think about. He was the Mets general manager from 2010 to 2018, rejoining the organization when Steve Cohen purchased the club from the Wilpon family this past November.

For Tony DeFrancesco, it’s difficult to envision a more important UCLA job than his. As the campus’s chief liaison and executive director of veterans affairs relations and programs, DeFrancesco says it’s his job not only to make sure veterans feel supported on campus but to also make sure UCLA’s partnership and programs with the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration remain successful in helping those who have served their country.
“They have given so much with their service. It’s truly my privilege to repay their service by helping them,” said DeFrancesco, who since he started his job on Sept. 1 has overseen UCLA’s veteran-focused programs on the West Los Angeles VA campus to ensure compliance with the joint lease agreement between UCLA and the VA.
Mets hire former player Tony Tarasco as first base coach
NEW YORK The New York Mets have hired Tony Tarasco to be their first base coach, bringing the former outfielder back to the franchise where he ended his playing career.
The Mets announced the hiring Wednesday. The 50-year-old Tarasco will take over for Tony DeFrancesco, who is moving to a new role as senior advisor for player development and scouting.
Tarasco was born in Manhattan and is one of 139 players to play for the Yankees and Mets, but he s best known in New York for a play in the 1996 AL Championship Series when he was with the Baltimore Orioles. Tarasco was chasing Derek Jeter s long fly in right field when 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier reached over the wall and deflected the ball into the seats. Umpires ruled it a home run, and the Yankees went on to win the series.
