Staff and leadership within northwestern Ontario’s healthcare system say certain emergent, urgent and elective surgeries will continue in local hospitals, despite Ontario’s order to ramp down these procedures.
The province told all hospitals to begin to cease all non-essential and elective surgeries earlier this month, everywhere pediatric specialty hospitals. It was a similar order issued last March during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as more resources are needed for patients in intensive care units.
But President and CEO of the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, Ray Racette, explains his staff are in the best position to determine if the patient’s surgery should continue, noting many residents have been on a waiting list since early 2020.

Along with other hospitals across the province, the Dryden Regional Health Centre will limit non-emergency surgeries.
On April 21, the Ministry of Health directed all Ontario hospitals to ramp down non-urgent and non-emergent surgeries and procedures, to preserve capacity in the healthcare system to help deal with COVID-19 patients throughout the province.
The DRHC says patients will be contacted if their surgery or procedure will be cancelled but assures all other services including urgent surgeries and procedures will continue as planned.
“The COVID situation in other parts of the province is quite alarming,” says Doreen Armstrong-Ross, Chief Executive Officer at the Dryden Regional Health Centre. “We are prepared to assist the province in any that we can to help protect the healthcare system, and save lives. This could include having patients from elsewhere admitted to DRHC, or sending willing staff to other parts of the province

All non-essential surgeries and other services will be put on hold in most parts of Ontario starting Monday due to overwhelmed hospitals and a beleaguered health care system.
However, hospitals in northern Ontario will be allowed to continue the procedures.
The Dryden Regional Health Centre and other local hospitals say they will continue to perform elective surgeries and provide all other services as scheduled.
Saying that officials say at the request of Ontario Health, the hospital is prepared to ramp down non-urgent and emergency services and elective surgeries on short notice if required.
The public will be informed right away if that decision is made.
