Since 1990, transport emissions have increased 90 per cent, and they’re still going up. Over the same period, agriculture, the largest emitting sector, has gone up 17 per cent. The Ministry of Transport’s (Te Manatū Waka) briefing to new minister Michael Wood suggests significant emissions reductions won’t happen without road emissions coming down. Meaningful reductions are urgent – and “harder measures” will need to start biting “over the next three years”, the document said.

The Yaris Cross is also being hit by a separate recall relating to its rear centre seatbelt. Meanwhile, 392 Yaris Cross vehicles are being recalled to fix an issue affecting the rear centre seatbelt anchor bracket in models manufactured between July and October 2020. This is a precautionary measure to repair the centre rear seatbelt due to a potential concern associated with the finished edge of the seatbelt bracket. There is a possibility that the seatbelt webbing may be damaged during a collision, reducing the effectiveness of the restraint. Both repairs will be carried out by Toyota stores for free, with the seatbelt fix taking an hour. The hybrid system needs nine hours of work, so it might pay to source a loan vehicle from Toyota if that affects you.

The humble utility is set to undergo a seismic shift.
Electric motors, battery packs and silent driving are coming soon, along with innovative functions including generator-like charging systems for tools, lights, e-bikes, you name it.
This decade we’ll see a number of high-profile dual-cab pick-up trucks adopt diesel-electric and potentially petrol-electric hybrid powertrains, with some models expected as early as 2021.
From 48-volt mild-hybrid systems and electric turbochargers to traditional series-parallel hybrids and more sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrains that will offer 50-100km of pure-electric driving, the low-tech workhorse is about to undergo a high-tech upgrade that could change the way Aussies consider utes.
