Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno abates parking tickets given out without warning, asks that residents are given ‘proper notification and notice to adjust accordingly’ Updated 10:27 AM; Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno is abating parking tickets recently given out on Dunmoreland Street in Springfield after residents told MassLive they had been given no warning. “I was like, ‘Whoa, whoa. What is going on?” said James Evans, adding that he saw six people walking down both sides of the street giving out tickets before he noticed the new signs. “They didn’t give us no warning.” The 72-year-old has been living on Dunmoreland Street for more than 50 years, always parking his car on the street because he lives in a multi-family house and others park in the driveway.

Springfield Mayor s Legal Bills In Police Commission Suit Total Nearly $60,000

3:27     The legal bills to taxpayers are adding up in the fight between the City Council and the mayor over who should run the police department in Springfield, Massachusetts.        The city has paid out just under $60,000,so far, to a Worcester law firm to represent Mayor Domenic Sarno, who has vowed to appeal a judge’s ruling that a City Council approved ordinance creating a five-member Board of Police Commissioners is “valid and enforceable.”    Asked about the expense, Sarno declined to comment.    City Solicitor Ed Pikula said the city’s Law Department could not participate in a case that pits one branch of city government against the other, so an outside counsel had to be hired.  The attorneys representing the City Council are not charging for their work.

Massachusetts Will End All COVID-19 Restrictions May 29th, Change Mask Rules

4:28      In a sharp acceleration of the timetable for fully reopening Massachusetts, Gov. Charlie Baker announced today that all COVID-19-era business restrictions will end on May 29th.   Also on that day, the mask mandate will be lifted and replaced with one that follows current CDC guidelines.  Whether all municipalities in the state will go along, or choose to keep some restrictions in place a bit longer, remains to be seen.    Reacting minutes after the governor’s announcement, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno was cautious when asked if the city will follow the same timetable and end all business restrictions, gathering size limits, and its mask-wearing requirements on May 29th.

After A 22-Month Tenure, Springfield City Clerk Tasheena Davis Resigns

There is a key job open in City Hall in Springfield, Massachusetts. Springfield City Clerk Tasheena Davis has resigned, effective June 1st, 2021 after just 22 months in the job.  In a statement released by the office of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, Davis said she will return to her previous job as an associate solicitor in the city’s Law Department.   She was quoted in the statement as saying “practicing law is a passion of mine and I am appreciative of getting back to my passion.” Sarno said he is nominating Springfield Election Commissioner Gladys Oyola-Lopez to the clerk vacancy. But the authority to hire the City Clerk rests with the City Council.  Council President Marcus Williams said candidates for the job will be solicited.  Applicants will be vetted by a three-person ad-hoc committee of Councilors that will recommend finalists for the full Council to publicly interview.
