Springfield Adopts 'Puppy Mill' Ordinance, Pet Store Threatens Lawsuit

3:00     Elected officials in a western Massachusetts city say they’ve struck a blow against the inhumane breeding of dogs.   A local pet store is threatening a lawsuit.     The city of Springfield has put on the books a ban on the retail sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits sourced from commercial breeders.      The so-called “puppy mill” ordinance was unanimously approved by the City Council and signed by Mayor Domenic Sarno, according to the mayor’s spokesman.      Councilor Melvin Edwards, the lead sponsor, said it came about out of concern for animals coming to pet stores from high-volume commercial dog breeders.     With the vote to pass this, we get the clock starting on creating a more safer environment for both the consumer and the animals that exist in the city of Springfield, Edwards said.

Springfield Targets Pro-Vaccine Messages To Young Adults

3:15    With a majority of new coronavirus infections occurring in younger people in Springfield, Massachusetts, efforts are planned to encourage vaccinations.    Fifty-nine percent of the new COVID-19 cases in Springfield last week were in people age 30 and younger, while people age 51 and older accounted for just 16 percent of the most recent infections.     There was a five percent drop from the previous week in new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Springfield residents age 51 and older, according to Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris.       Those ages groups that we see that have been vaccinated we are seeing those numbers in those age groups lower, said Caulton-Harris.

AF-AM News bits – April 2021

by afampov · April 12, 2021 JYNAI MCDONALD: IS ON THE JOB In the March issue of Point of View, I wrote a front page article on Ward 4 city council candidate Jynai McDonald that included her plans to revive the dormant tennis court on Acorn Street which is so overgrown with brush that it can no longer be seen. Apparently she decided not to wait until she wins the election. Jynai has already petitioned the Community Preservation Act Commission for funding to redevelop the court, which has been approved pending a Park Commission vote (which may have already happened by the time you read this) and has made substantial progress toward obtaining all other necessary approvals including consulting with the Bay Area Neighborhood Council whose President, Gwendolyn Smith, has written a letter of approval as have many other community and political leaders including a letter of support from our new State Senator Adam Gomez as well as a letter of support from th

Officials Outline Plans To Spend American Rescue Plan Funds

3:21 Officials in the largest city in western Massachusetts have sketched out plans to spend tens of millions of dollars coming directly to the municipal government from the $2 trillion American Rescue Plan.   Springfield can expect to receive at least $97.5 million in new aid from the federal government – an amount officials described as “transformative.” We will use it wisely and we will use the leverage of this investment to make for a stronger city for everyone in the city of Springfield, Mayor Domenic Sarno said at a press conference this week with U.S. Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA1). Sarno announced categories where the city plans to spend the money including job creation and economic development, help for seniors, assistance for struggling nonprofits, and housing.
