LAKELAND, Fla. It was the loudest out of the Yankees’ spring training this side of Giancarlo Stanton.
Hulking first base prospect Chris Gittens tore into a 1-1 sinker with two outs in the eighth inning of a 7-4 win over the Tigers at Joker Merchant Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
It ended up just a force out at second base, but it sent pitcher Edwar Ramirez straight to the dirt as he tried to avoid the baseball zipping at him at 118.8 mph, according to Statcast. That would have been the second hardest hit baseball of the Yankees’ entire season in 2020, behind only Stanton’s 121.3 mph blast.
