Despite Season-Opening Loss, Young Utah Gains Valuable Experience and Shows Fight

Utah gave No. 5 Denver everything it had to open the 2021 college lacrosse season on Saturday.  After the Utes jumped out to a 3-1 halftime lead, the Pioneers roared back in the second half to come out on top. For a team tasked with replacing its injured starting goalie Zion Dechesere as well as two starting poles plus 80% of its offensive scoring from a season ago, Utah never gave up.  When Ethan Walker found JJ Sillstrop for a behind-the-back dagger to make it 9-6, the Utes kept fighting. Unsurprised by the way his team competed and never gave up against a team with loftier expectations of getting to Championship Weekend, head coach Brian Holman spoke to IL about his biggest takeaway moving forward.

Second-Half Surge Helps No 5 Denver Hold off Utah s Upset Bid

Saturday Recap: Denver Holds off Utah, Bellarmine Tops Mercer

We can officially say it. Lacrosse is back, Y’all! It was a much slower first weekend of action than usual with only two games on the docket, but college lacrosse officially returned on Saturday. Bellarmine took down Mercer on in the first game of the season and just a few hours later we saw Denver best Utah. Denver 9, Utah 8 The Denver Pioneers overcame missing 12 players, including Schuyler Blair, Alex Simmons, and Colin Squires, struggling heavily on the power play (1-for-8), and going 8-for-20 at the faceoff dot, to get hot in the second half and put away the visiting Utah Utes, 9-8, in their home opener.
