Hoover police Chief Nick Derzis said 2020 was the strangest year heâs ever seen in his 40-plus years as a police officer, but it resulted in some positive crime trends for the city.
Total offenses in categories reported to the FBI were down 16% in 2020 from 4,458 to 3,749, police records indicate.

Heavy snow moved through the Wichita area late Saturday morning and as roads became slick, there were several crashes on major roadways.
Accidents were reported at Kellogg and Tyler Road, I-135 and Kellogg, Kellogg and Oliver, I-135 at 53rd Street North, and at Kellogg and Washington, among other locations.
The snow moved east into Butler County and was out of the area during the afternoon. Eisenhower National Airport in Wichita reported one inch of snowfall. No more precipitation is expected until early Monday, when there could be flurries and freezing drizzle. Colder temperatures are in the forecast through the next week, with highs expected in the teens.
