Manager Dave Martinez said ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Baltimore Orioles that the first priority with Strasburg is to discern what the actual problem is for Strasburg. There’s confusion as to why the 33-year-old can throw long toss without issue yet feels discomfort in his neck once he takes the mound.
Washington hopes this latest visit to a specialist will answer that question while also providing a path forward.
“It’s more of a comfort thing,” Martinez said. “Like I said, he felt uncomfortable after his bullpen sessions, so now we just want him to go see a specialist and see why this is happening. It doesn’t happen to him when he plays long toss. But after he has a bullpen, he feels discomfort up in his neck area. The best thing to do now is have him see somebody else to pinpoint what it is, if it’s anything or if it’s just a muscle thing.”
“Every loss hurts, but we know where we’re at, we know we need to win ballgames now,” Hand said. “It definitely stings, for sure.”
The Nationals had the chance to add to their one-run lead in the top of the ninth. But they scuttled that chance, just as they had scuttled chances throughout the contest. Apart from Ryan Zimmerman’s three-run homer in the sixth inning, Washington went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position Sunday.
And over the three-game series with the Orioles, the team went 2-for-23 with runners in scoring position, leading to three deflating losses during a key part of the season.

Matt Harvey tossed six shutout innings for the second consecutive start and the Baltimore Orioles held on to defeat the visiting Washington Nationals 5-3 on Saturday.
Trey Mancini and Ryan Mountcastle homered for Baltimore, which goes for the series sweep on Sunday.
Harvey (5-10), who came out of the All-Star break 3-10 with a 7.77 ERA, allowed one hit in winning his second straight start and lowered his ERA to 6.65. He struck out four batters without a walk.
Dillon Tate pitched the ninth for his second save.
Juan Soto hit his 17th homer of the season for Washington.
