When compared to the tourist-centered beaches to its east and west, Navarre Beach can be considered something of a minimalist destination absent of any colorful tourist traps, shiny zip line towers or crowded souvenir shops, the Santa Rosa County beach has successfully marketed itself as Florida s most relaxing place for the past five years.
But as tourism to the pristine beach continues to grow, county tourism leaders are faced with figuring out how to accommodate the increase in visitors while also maintaining Navarre s simple charm that sets it apart from other Panhandle beaches.
Enter: Santa Rosa s longtime tourism development director, Julie White, and her recently unveiled vision for what Navarre Beach could look like in eight to 10 years. It includes a major face-lift of the existing facilities at the beach, and adds an amphitheater, food trucks, retail space, playgrounds, public art exhibits and more.
After collecting dust and notoriety for the past 17 years, Navarre Beach s infamous Turner House a dilapidated red brick home at the end of Gulf Boulevard that has sat dormant and derelict since Hurricane Ivan in 2004 finally has a resolution in sight.
Santa Rosa County lawyers reached a settlement agreement via mediation in February with the home s owners, Gary and Staci Turner, about the future of the 6,340-square-foot house. The agreement lays out a four-phase, 180-day timeline for the Turners to complete needed repairs and construction projects on the home to make it safe and bring it up to code. The Santa Rosa County courthouse on Avalon Boulevard one of the largest, most expensive construction projects the county has ever undertaken is slated to be complete within a year, said county and construction officials Friday.
The three-story, 115,000-square-foot building in Milton is on track to be finished by the end of 2021, and courthouse officials are slated to start moving into the building by the second quarter of 2022.
County officials toured the facility Friday morning to get an update on its progress. Santa Rosa County awarded a $42.8 million contract to Ajax Building Corp., Pensacola-based Sam Marshall Architects and HOK in early 2019, and construction on the project which has been nearly two decades in the making officially began in November 2019.

Santa Rosa County workers have put up a fence in front of a public waterfront access point in Holley, after the homeowners on either side of the access say they’ve seen an increase in illicit activity on the property in recent months a claim the Santa Rosa County Sheriff s Office says is not supported with records or call data.
Santa Rosa County Commission Chairman Dave Piech told the News Journal on Friday that the waterfront access, located between two private homes on Holley Point Road on East Bay, was sectioned off by the county after complaints from the homeowners concerning illicit activity and drug use on the property.
